How a PDO thread lift works
A PDO thread lift is a procedure that uses a dissolvable suture to tighten and lift your skin. The threads are made of polydioxanone (PDO). When inserted into precise depths beneath the skin, the injected PDO mono threads trigger fibroblasts which are responsible for the production of collagen fibres. We apply numbing cream prior to the treatment, and as a result, this procedure has very little discomfort.

What to Expect
We will advise the best way for you to prepare for your procedure. This can include avoiding smoking and alcohol along with substances that can increase your risk of bleeding such as Aspirin. After developing a treatment plan that works for you and your skin needs, we can proceed with your procedure.
A usual treatment requires between 50 to 150 individual PDO mono threads, depending on your chosen treatment area(s). Your clinician will apply a topical or local anaesthetic in order to make the process as comfortable and painless as possible. In-clinic treatments can take around 45 to 60 minutes.
The location of the Matrix PDO mono threads can vary based on the patient and what they are seeking to achieve from the procedure. We insert the threads in a cross hatching pattern, to create a “scaffold” for the collagen and elastin that will be produced as a result of your body’s own healing response triggered by the treatment. After treatment, the PDO mono threads result in gradual skin rejuvenation and, after around 12 weeks, form a matrix of collagen and elastin. After the sutures dissolve, what is left is stronger and tighter skin that is better supported.
Aftercare
There is bruising and some swelling post treatment but that is both expected and desirable. The trauma from insertion will assist in providing an even better result. You will need to minimise your facial movements in order to help your skin heal and avoid dislodging your PDO mono threads from their position. Additionally, during the healing process, we may advise that you:
- Avoid hot saunas and baths
- Avoid sun exposure and use a high SPF sunscreen
- Drink plenty of water
- Refrain from intensive exercise
- Sleep on your back to avoid pressure to the face
Since a PDO thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure, the risks associated are low. However, we will inform you of the risks prior to your treatment in order to ensure that you are fully aware.
